June 21 – Indigenous Peoples Day
(January 25, 2021)
This year, Canadians celebrate the 25th Anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21. It’s a day for all of us to recognize the many achievements of our country’s three Indigenous people – the First Nations, the Inuit and the Metis. This important day is now part of a full month of activity since June was declared National Indigenous History Month in a unanimous vote in the House of Commons in 2009. This year offers wonderful opportunities for each of us to participate from home with resources to
read, listen, watch and try (crafts).
Recently, the remains of 215 buried children were discovered on the grounds of a former Residential School, operated by the Catholic Church, in Kamloops B.C. Such events resurface deep wounds. It’s important for all Canadians to continue to learn more about this shameful period. It’s also important to celebrate the outstanding contributions and rich diversity our Indigenous brothers and sisters bring to Canada. Check out
