To: Ontario Minister of Justice, (Local MPP), etc.
There should be no discrimination between rich and poor in establishing bail for those accused of non-violent offences as this leads to the poor in jail and the rich on bail.
Bail restrictions may be imposed (i.e. reporting regularly, electronic monitoring and/or treatment for addictions, if applicable.) Sending accused non-violent persons to jail, in cases where they cannot afford bail, reduces the chances for rehabilitation and family support and increases the possible negative influences of contact with convicted criminals.
We, the taxpayers, believe that this is a more efficient and effective solution to the skyrocketing costs of incarceration, without serious consequences to society in general.
