Social Justice Activities - Brant Youth

The advent season also saw a lot of elementary school social justice clubs stepping forward to help out. One of the most heart-warming was a grade 1 class at St Peter’s school. Teacher Mrs Rajnak had her students take turns bringing the book “Franklin’s Christmas Gift” home for parents to read with their children.

In the story, Franklin struggles to decide which of his toys would be worthy of giving away to someone who has none. The students then chose which of there toys they wished to donate to us. Spiritual advisor Caroline Boerboom and I then went and read the story to them and they proudly brought their gifts out to my waiting van. We in turn donated the toys to the local Christmas Basket campaign.

Another of our elementary school Social Justice groups ran a successful “Tree of Warmth “ campaign, where gloves hats and scarves were hung on their large Christmas tree in place of other decorations.... sorry, I don’t have a pic, but it was quite spectacular!

A social justice class at Assumption college school ran a rather unique event in support of our neighbours in need. One of the teachers on staff shared gift of knitting with that. She taught them how to net, and they proceeded to knit scarves, hats, and even mittens for us. They ended up donating three boxes cram packed with these one of a kind expressions of love and empathy! In this photo, we are wearing a few of their creations.

Yet another SJ club, I believe they call themselves the Young Avengers for Christ, at Sacred Heart school, had a rather creative fundraising event. For their Christmas concert, they sold tickets for front row seating for the parents. The tickets were then put in a container, and a draw was held. Winners were able to watch their children from the prime front row seats! That endeavour raised several hundred dollars for us :-)
