Doing a little’ during Lent

Doing a little’ during Lent

In my life I want to become better and do a little good.
Bl Frederic Ozanam

If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.
Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

We can do no great things, only small things with great love.
St Theresa of Calcutta

Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Some of the greatest people are also the most humble. We see this again and again within the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and in our own faith experiences. When I reflect on the people who have influenced my life on a personal level they are almost all humble people.

Those who make the most noise, those who draw crowds and become famous personalities can ignite passions and inflame crowds, but their voices are like thunder – loud but brief. People whose stories inspire in the long run are those who speak more softly and who let their actions speak for them. “Do as I say!” doesn’t last. Quietly living what I believe leaves a legacy.

Lent 2021 is a quiet time for most of us. Covid 19 will not be eradicated or even under control for some time. In terms of living a “good Lent” staying at home because of Covid might not be such a bad thing. We have more time to pray and to meditate. Money that would have been spent on recreation is available for almsgiving. Our conferences and councils may not be able to undertake big projects just yet, but we can still find ways to feed and clothe those who need help while maintaining social distancing. We can come together as Vincentian family via Teams, Zoom and other online platforms. We can do the small things that St Theresa and Dr King spoke of. We can discover how to live as Bl Frederic did – becoming better and doing a little good.

Lent is already here. Is it too late? What can I still do?
  • I can pray more.
  • I can devote time to scripture.
  • I can set aside a little money each day as my personal gift to Christ in his poor.
  • I can study the history of SSVP and find inspiration in it.
  • I can attend mass, in person if it’s possible, or via tv or other media.
  • I can reach out to others (my fellow Vincentians, friends, family) in ways as simple as making a phone call, sending an email or writing a brief note.
These are all small things but small things is what Bl Frederic was talking about. Small things will help us become better as we do a little good each day.

May God bless us all,
Denise
